The Search for Chometz
What is the search for Chometz? Why is it such a big deal? What is chometz anyway? What does it represent? Chometz is the leavening, the rising, the billowing of the dough, of the yeast , the fermenting. It is the expansion of oneself into something greater. It is arrogance. It is pride, It is enlargement. But it is unlimited growing.
Growing without inspection. That is why we need a Pass over. We need to Look Over everything we do. Oversight. That is why once a year we need to review, we need to humble, we need to change our diet. We don't want to Die Yet, but we need to stop for a while. Die down and Grow again. Introspect.
That is why in a land far, far away, a long, long time ago, there lived a humble man. He lived in one small room. Yet he took all night to check his room for chometz. To search deep. This man was the First Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rebbe Schneur Zalman.
That was why when I was in Yeshiva I spent hours in my one tiny, little dorm room looking out on the alley in Brooklyn, looking, thinking, wondering what i was doing with my life. What was I searching for? Was I a grain of wheat? Was I big like a cake ? Was I holy like a bagel?
Or is that why Rabbi Ferris cleaned his room in the same yeshiva years earlier, the same yeshiva Rabbi Langer went to, the same room where Rabbi Langer put a sign on his door "Stay Out! Cleaned for Passover!" And this is the sign that kept out a strange young man wandering the halls in the Yeshiva? A young man named Robert Zimmerman, or better known as Bob Dylan.
Let us not keep anyone out this year! "Let all who are hungry, come and eat!"
Let all who are hungry, both physically and spiritually, come and take!
